About Municipality

Beit Jala Municipality is an important local institution in the city of Beit Jala, playing a central role in managing municipal affairs, providing public services, and supporting the development of the city. The first municipal council in Beit Jala was established in 1912, and since then the municipality has developed into a local authority responsible for addressing the needs of residents and improving public services and infrastructure. Beit Jala is located on a hill adjacent to Bethlehem, approximately two kilometres from the Church of the Nativity. The city has a long history and a rich cultural and religious heritage. According to the municipality’s official website, Beit Jala has a population of approximately 14,563 people and covers an area of around 13 square kilometres.

The municipality’s responsibilities include providing public services, regulating construction and planning, implementing development projects, and working to improve the city’s environment and infrastructure. It also seeks to encourage community participation in identifying local needs and setting future priorities. In this context, the municipality began the process in 2026 of launching the Strategic Development Plan for Beit Jala for the period 2027–2030. The plan focuses on four main areas: environment and infrastructure, economic development, social development, and administration and good governance. Through these efforts, Beit Jala Municipality aims to preserve the city’s identity and heritage while promoting sustainable development and improving the quality of life of its residents.
